Umbria
Umbria has a special role due to its geographic location, as the region does not possess any coastline. Whoever thinks that this region is therefore unattractive for tourists, though, could not be more wrong. Umbria offers an unforgettable holiday experience especially for nature lovers. Mountains, rivers and pastures grace Umbria’s natural landscape. The huge lake Lago Trasimeno is one of the most visited places in Umbria. In addition to the activities presented by the lake itself, its scenic location surrounded by numerous mountains is magnificent. Nestled in a thoroughly harmonious landscape are romantic, medieval towns full of history, deeply engrained culture and art treasures.
Some sample experiences to enjoy as a private or small group tour:
Perugia and Assisi
Perugia’s centre has hardly changed since the Middle Ages. The houses tower up and can be seen from a distance like a crown on the crest of a hill. It harbours a treasure trove of sights from all eras, which you will discover during an exciting city tour with a local guide. Continue on to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, where you will be enchanted by the art and spirituality of this place. Visit the basilica with the excellent fresco cycle by Giotto, the city square and the churches of St. Clara and St. Ruffino.
Todi and Orvieto
Orvieto’s location is unique - atop a steep rocky plateau amidst vineyards and olive groves. This city built upon tuff stone is already impressive from a distance. The cathedral is the most important building in Orvieto and characterises the city’s skyline. The imposing structure allows a glimpse of the city’s sumptuous past. Orvieto has a long tradition of ceramic handiwork and of woodworking. A shopping trip through the city will certainly result in a souvenir or two. In the afternoon, in Todi, located high above the Tiber, you will see the medieval main square, the Piazza del Popolo, with the cathedral and the three city palaces from the 13th century, that all served as the town hall at various times and one of which is still the seat of the town government today.
Spoleto and the Marmore Waterfall
The old Roman city of Spoleto was once a powerful Langobard duchy. The serious and austere character of the city is softened by the picturesque alleyways, palaces and the many preserved medieval buildings. The next stop is the Marmore Waterfall. This work of unique beauty dates back to the Roman period. The bottled-up water of the Velino falls 165 m to the river bed of the Nera.
Gubbio
Look forward to the splendid mountain setting of Gubbio. The city’s glorious history is evident in every corner of today’s little city. The Sant’Ubaldo Basilica is located somewhat outside the city on Monte Ingino, where the relics of the city’s patron saint are located. The historic district houses impressive sights: Gothic palaces, churches and imposing towers let visitors immerse themselves in former times.
Mountain Towns and Umbria
The first stop of today’s excursion is the picturesquely situated mountain town of Spello, which you will discover dur-ing a stroll. The Roman gates and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, adorned with frescoes, are worth seeing. Then you will continue on to Montefalco. This town rules over the area like a falcon from his aerie and is considered the ‘Balcony of Umbria’ due to its splendid vista. A walk through the historic centre of Bevagna rounds out the excursion. There a visit to an oil mill can be arranged.
